Asset Tracking

A scalable messaging system for tracking assets and sharing data to improve operational efficiency.

Trailer and Container Tracking

The BlackBerry® IoT Platform could be used to support a container tracking platform for transport ships and ports, as well as regulators and customs officials. Specifically, the platform could store a detailed chain of custody information for goods transported, and through the data intelligence module, store accurate location logs to support the expedient management and validation of perishable, controlled, or dangerous substances.

By leveraging the platform’s permissions architecture, this data could be shared between stakeholders securely. This capability could be leveraged to improve the efficiency at harbors and ports, and lower regulatory oversight costs.

Just-in-time Delivery

On land, the platform could be used to support just-in-time delivery services. Fleet managers can observe and oversee real-time fleet deployments with the support of intuitive search and display tools, which are included with the platform’s analytics component. Vehicle data such as speed and braking can be tracked, along with driving and traffic conditions to facilitate optimization of fuel usage and potentially reduce insurance costs.

The logic tools can also be used to define intelligent alarms to automate regular or labor-intensive activities. For example, the time-to-service of vehicles can be monitored and tracked by the data intelligence module and maintenance activities can be defined and pushed to owner/operators.

Platform advantages

Security

The asset tracking industry has traditionally been focused on physical security, but data security is increasingly important. It takes significant investment to develop end-to-end secure systems and corporate responses to threats. Typical IoT platforms are lacking in meaningful security because of the investment requirements.

Confidentiality

All of the BlackBerry IoT Platform modules including data intelligence, lifecycle management, device management, and federated identity include the security features found in the platform. These features offer support for OAuth2 or ECC TLS to establish device trust, available certificate management, and patented encryption to help keep data protected while the data is in transit.

Integrity

The asset tracking industry has many actors - manufacturers, buyers, carriers, ports, regulators, and insurance agents. As the electronic exchange of data becomes more common, authenticating, securing, and managing data flow between the actors will become critical features, which can be handled via the BlackBerry IoT Platform. Further, the permissions designed into the BlackBerry IoT Platform enable fine-grained control of data access and facilitate data sharing, such as for shipment exceptions or delivery status.

Availability

BlackBerry maintains industry surveillance and security incidence response teams for its existing operations. The teams are employed to detect emerging security threats and to respond accordingly. These services are provided as part of the BlackBerry IoT Platform.

The infrastructure provides physical data center security and security crisis management planning to ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and contingency preparedness. The lifecycle management module also includes advanced access controls and support for integration with leading on-premises user management systems (such as LDAP) to help keep data confidential.

Scalability

As hardware costs decrease and network coverage becomes ubiquitous, the asset tracking industry is poised to grow rapidly. Actively tracking products at every level will become commonplace.

The result will be millions of connected and active assets in a single fleet. Further messaging traffic will increase as more devices are expected to communicate more frequently and with more information. Scalability of every component of an IoT system will become crucial. Every element of BlackBerry’s IoT Platform is designed to scale, without disruption, as data traffic and applications increase.

Efficiency

The BlackBerry IoT Platform is offered as a hosted solution. This naturally leads to traditional software-as-a-service benefits such as economies of scale and outsourced expertise.

Quicker realization of benefits

BlackBerry IoT services are fully managed 24/7. New features can be rolled out rapidly across existing device fleets and service level agreements are available to support critical use cases, both for high value assets or where real-time location information is paramount.

Subscription pricing

The asset tracking industry is based on the movement of goods and is highly susceptible to global market conditions. Through subscription pricing, BlackBerry enables predictable IT expenditures based on actual business use. Eliminate time-to-market risk as well as traditional operating expenses for IT, like database administration, system administration, and support.

On-demand scale

The asset tracking industry is highly susceptible to yearly volume changes. BlackBerry services are there to support customers at a cost that scales with their business. Eliminate capacity planning, handle peaks and valleys in business transparently, and forget about capital expenses and hardware devaluation.
